Welcome Back for the 2019-20 School Year

It is very exciting to welcome back students, Staff, parents, and community members for the 2019-20 school year.

This will be the third year of using our “Areas of Focus” model for improvement.  Student Achievement, Service, and People continue to be the three priority areas.  This model allows us to use data from assessments and surveys to make decisions regarding priority areas for both the District as well as each school.  Using this cascading of priorities allows us to align our goals from the Board level all the way down to the students.

Our focus on student achievement continues to be a priority.  The District is in the third year of a transition to Target-Based Learning.  The first phase of this program was for all departments to write learning targets for students.  We have spent the last two years working on learning targets and this year we will transition into the second phase of this program which is assessments.  Staff will be working on the process of aligning our assessments to these learning targets.  We believe that through the use of target-based learning we will continue to see measurable growth in student achievement.

Student/Staff safety has been a priority as well and through the school safety grant and end of the year funds, we have been able to make several improvements.  Some of the projects have included new/updated surveillance cameras, an anonymous reporting tip-line, shatter resistant window film, updated exterior door locks, first alert system throughout the District, all new exterior lights, interior classroom door locks, and several training opportunities.  While we can never be fully prepared, with these improvements and the use of regular drills, we feel we have better prepared ourselves for situations that may occur.

We have also made other improvements throughout the summer.  Due to non-compliance issues, we had to replace the playground on the East side of the Elementary School.  We also replaced the basketball court on that playground as well.  Other areas that we addressed were the parking lots and paths, upgrade to the heating system, technology, and kitchen equipment.

Success would not be possible without all of the hard work that is completed by the maintenance staff, secretaries, and Administrators over the summer.  Getting the District prepared for another school year is not an easy task and it takes a lot of effort from many people to get this accomplished.  A huge Thank You goes out to these people.

A new year brings excitement and opportunity.  We understand the role we play in the lives of our families as well as in the community and we do not take this responsibility lightly.  We look forward to a very positive and productive year together!  We extend a special, year-long invitation to our families and the community to join us at school activities and events whenever possible.  Your active participation is key to the success of our young Cardinals.  On behalf of the Brodhead School District, I want to thank you in advance for all that you do to help make our District successful.  Welcome Back!
